Q1 What is a metal substrate?

Metal honeycomb substrates are manufactured in nearly 10,000 specifications and support full non‑standard customization.

  • Housing materials: 316L, 304, 444, 441 (or customer‑specified).
  • Core material: FeCr21Al6 (ferritic stainless steel).
  • Carrier outer diameter: 12 – 960 mm.
  • Height: 9 – 150 mm.
  • Cell density (CPSI): 5 – 1200 cpsi.
  • Shell wall thickness: 0.5 – 3.0 mm (shell‑less option available).
  • Core wall thickness: 0.03 – 0.18 mm.
  • Internal core configuration: single core, S‑core, or three‑core.
  • Available shapes: cylindrical, rectangular, square, racetrack (oval), elliptical, trapezoidal, pentagonal, pear‑shaped.

These substrates offer extreme design flexibility to match virtually any exhaust system requirement.

Q2 What are the advantages and functions of a metal catalyst?

Key Advantages:

  • Exceptional thermal durability: Metal substrates can withstand continuous operating temperatures up to 1100°C and short‑term peaks even higher, making them ideal for high‑performance and heavy‑duty applications.
  • Superior thermal shock resistance: The metallic structure has a very low thermal expansion coefficient and high ductility, so it resists cracking under rapid heating/cooling cycles.
  • High mechanical strength: Metal foils are strong and resistant to vibration and physical impact, reducing the risk of breakage during installation or driving.
  • Ultra‑thin walls & low backpressure: Wall thickness can be as low as 0.03 mm, allowing very high cell densities (up to 1200 cpsi) while maintaining low exhaust backpressure for better engine performance.
  • Flexible shape & size customization: Almost any shape (round, oval, trapezoid, pear, etc.) and size can be produced to fit unconventional exhaust housings.
  • Lightweight: Compared to ceramic, metal substrates are lighter, contributing to overall vehicle weight reduction.

Core Function – Three‑Way Catalytic Conversion:
Like ceramic substrates, metal substrates act as a carrier for the precious metal catalyst coating (platinum, palladium, rhodium). When exhaust gases pass through the honeycomb channels, the coating promotes simultaneous oxidation and reduction reactions:

  • Carbon Monoxide (CO) → oxidized to Carbon Dioxide (CO₂)
  • Unburned Hydrocarbons (HC) → oxidized to CO₂ and Water (H₂O)
  • Nitrogen Oxides (NOx) → reduced to Nitrogen (N₂) and Oxygen (O₂)

This achieves over 98% conversion efficiency when the engine is at operating temperature, meeting strict Euro 3‑6 emission standards and ensuring cleaner exhaust.

Q3 How does a catalytic converter work?

A three-way catalytic converter (TWC) simultaneously converts three primary harmful exhaust pollutants into less harmful substances through oxidation and reduction reactions:

  • Carbon Monoxide (CO) → oxidized into Carbon Dioxide (CO₂)
  • Unburned Hydrocarbons (HC) → oxidized into Carbon Dioxide (CO₂) and Water (H₂O)
  • Nitrogen Oxides (NOx) → reduced into Nitrogen (N₂) and Oxygen (O₂)

The substrate (ceramic or metal) is coated with a "washcoat" containing precious metal catalysts (platinum, palladium, rhodium). As exhaust gases pass through the honeycomb channels at high temperature (around 300°C), these metals catalyze the chemical reactions that convert approximately 98% of harmful emissions into harmless gases. This process is essential for meeting global emissions standards and protecting air quality.

Q4 Does this meet Euro 3-6 emissions standards?

Yes. Our metal and ceramic catalytic converter substrates are designed to comply with Euro 3, Euro 4, Euro 5, and Euro 6 emissions standards. When properly installed on a vehicle that is otherwise in good mechanical condition, our substrates support the vehicle's ability to meet the emissions limits for which it was originally certified. Euro 3 was introduced in 2000, with each subsequent standard imposing stricter limits — our substrates are engineered to meet the requirements across this range.

Note: Emissions compliance depends on the complete vehicle system, not just the catalytic converter. Proper engine tuning, oxygen sensor function, and overall engine health are also critical factors.

Q5 What is your warranty policy?

Our warranty policy differs by product type:

  • Ceramic Muffler Cores — No warranty provided. These are mechanical components subject to wear and external factors.
  • Catalytic Converter Substrates (Ceramic or Metal) — Covered by a 2‑year / 50,000 km (approximately 31,000 miles) warranty against manufacturing defects. This warranty covers the substrate structure and catalytic coating integrity under normal use conditions.

The warranty does not cover damage caused by improper installation, engine misfire, use of leaded fuel, physical impact damage, or contamination from oil/coolant. Please retain your purchase receipt and installation records for warranty claims.

Q6 Installation guide for metal catalyst cores

Metal catalytic converter substrates are supplied as internal cores (the "guts") intended for professional installation. Follow these general guidelines for a safe and correct installation:

  1. Safety first — Allow the exhaust system to cool completely. Disconnect the negative battery terminal.
  2. Remove the old converter assembly — Carefully detach the entire catalytic converter unit from the vehicle's exhaust system.
  3. Open the housing (if replacing only the core) — The metal shell must be cut or split along the seam to access the old substrate. Use appropriate cutting tools without damaging the shell.
  4. Remove the old core — Extract the degraded substrate and any mounting mat or retaining rings.
  5. Inspect and clean the housing — Remove all debris, rust, and old mat residue from the interior. Ensure the shell is round and free of deep scratches or dents.
  6. Prepare the new metal core — Metal substrates are often supplied with an intumescent mounting mat. Wrap the core with the mat as per the manufacturer's instructions (if applicable).
  7. Insert the new core — Carefully slide the wrapped core into the housing. Ensure it is centred and properly aligned with the exhaust flow direction (usually marked on the core).
  8. Close and weld the housing — Seal the shell using TIG or MIG welding with appropriate filler material (stainless steel wire). Avoid excessive heat that could distort the core. Allow the weld to cool slowly.
  9. Reinstall the converter — Mount the reassembled converter back onto the vehicle using new gaskets and hardware. Tighten bolts to factory torque specifications.
  10. Test operation — Reconnect the battery, start the engine, and check for exhaust leaks. Allow the engine to reach normal operating temperature and verify that no check‑engine light appears. A short test drive is recommended to confirm proper function.
⚠️ Important: Always follow the vehicle manufacturer's service procedures. Improper welding or handling can deform the metal core, reduce performance, void the warranty, and create safety hazards. We strongly recommend installation by a certified exhaust specialist.
