Working Principle

Motorcycle catalytic converters use a METAL honeycomb structure coated with precious metal catalysts (Pt/Pd/RH) to promote oxidation and reduction reactions as hot exhaust gases pass through.

Main Reactions:

CO → CO₂ (carbon monoxide to carbon dioxide)

HC → CO₂ + H₂O (unburned hydrocarbons to carbon dioxide and water vapor)

NOx → N₂ + O₂ (nitrogen oxides to nitrogen and oxygen)

These chemical reactions significantly reduce air pollutants, helping your motorcycle meet emission regulations and run cleaner.

Common Misunderstanding: Catalytic Converter vs. Muffler

Many riders confuse the catalytic converter with a muffler, but they are completely different components:

Feature

Catalytic Converter

Muffler

Main Function

Reduces harmful gas emissions

Reduces exhaust noise

Internal Structure

Ceramic or metallic core with catalyst coating

Chambers and baffles to dampen sound

Visible Smoke/Odor

Reduces visible exhaust smoke and smell

Has no chemical effect on exhaust gases

Compliance Role

Required for emission standards (Euro 3/4/5/6, etc.)

Required for noise regulations only
