Engines naturally produce particulate matter which are tiny particles made up mostly of suit and Ash that form during combustion and nitrogen oxides are nox pollutants that contribute to air pollution.

That's where system like diesel particulate filter or DPF and AD blue comes in.

A DPF is a component in the exhaust system that captures and stores particulate matter.

The DPF is made of ceramic material with honeycomb structure,this honeycomb design has microscopic pores when exhaust gases pass through the DPF the particulate matter gets trapped in addition to the DPF.

Many diesel engines use a fluid called a blue or diesel exhaust fluid.

AD blue is made up of Uria and deionized water solution when injected into the exhaust,AD blue breaks down into ammonia which reacts with nox in the selective catalytic reduction system to form harmless nitrogen and water vapor.

Now over time suit builds up in the DPF and can eventually clog the filter to avoid this the DPF needs to undergo a process called regeneration which burns of the collected suit.

There are two main types of DPF regeneration passive and active.

Passive regeneration happens naturally when driving at higher speeds the exhaust temperature rises allowing trapped suit to burn off slowly.

Then there is active regeneration in which the engine injects extra fuel into the exhaust to raise its temperature to burn off the suit.

Sometimes regeneration doesn't happen as it should especially if you frequently Drive short trips or if the DPF is already too clogged in these cases a warning light might appear on your dashboard indicating a blocked DPF.

DPF and AD blue are both essential for cleaner diesel emissions the DPF captures the suit particles and AD blue neutralizes nox gases reducing the overall environmental impact of diesel vehicles.
